Info: A foundouk was a sort of mixed-use commercial property for travellers and merchants who came from across North Africa to trade. It was a hybrid of hotel and stable where animals (camels, donkeys, etc.) slept downstairs and people upstairs. Houmt Souk has a large number of foundouks, some of them still serving as places of trade, some have been converted into hotels and restaurants, some have become residential neighborhoods, and some are closed and neglected.
